The Senate has confirmed that it had received President Goodluck Jonathan’s letter on the nomination of Prof. Attahiru Jega as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The names of 10 new commissioners, who will also be screened by the Senate.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, Senator Ayogu Eze, who disclosed this to our correspondent on the telephone, said he believed that the President’s letter was already in the Senate.
According to him, the Senate President, David Mark, would read the letter at plenary on Tuesday and then a decision would be taken on how the process of the screening would go.
He, however, could not confirm whether the Senate would confirm Jega and his commissioners on Tuesday. But he noted that a decision would be taken on Tuesday.
He said, “I know that we are going to read the letter on Tuesday and then decide whether to suspend our rules and screen the nominees; or pick another date when they will be screened. It is most likely that a date will be picked after the letter is read.
“The Senate will also decide whether the nominees will be screened in plenary or by the relevant committee.
“What I can assure you is that the screening will be done in the open under the coverage of live cameras.”
He also said that the Senate would resume activities focusing on the treatment of the 2010 supplementary bill submitted by the President.
He also said that the Senate would consider the letter and observations sent to the National Assembly by the President on the 2010 Appropriation Act.
Eze expressed the hope that the houses of assembly of the 36 states would expeditiously attend to the amended portions of the constitution so as to assist the National Assembly to conclude its work on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
