Figurine Award

The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) may be the biggest awards fest on a huge continent, heralding a coming golden age in African cinema. But in only their sixth year they’re still a big, crazy party — without the usual filter of press fluff and PR sheen.

While festival organizers promised that this year (unlike last) the awards would be “hitch free” — in fact, 30 celebs of the Ghanaian delegation were stranded in Bayelsa Nigeria, where the fest took place on April 10th, because their return flights had never been booked.

Perhaps they should have asked Silvia Tapiwa Gwaza, the Malawian actress who snagged “Best Performance in a Leading Role” to help out. After all, Gwaza was a crew member for Air Malawi for 13 years before she resigned and then ended up starring in Malawi’s Seasons of a Life.

But these grounded celebs seemed like the only “hitch” this year, when 24-awards were doled out with no other bloopers. The Figurine, which we’ll review this week here at MTV Iggy, snagged the Best Picture as was expected from the film that took 3-months to produce (much longer than the average African production). AMAA director of operations Tony Anih said the fest is meant to honor such films, “It’s the quality and not quantity that is most important” — quality that can be lost in the hundreds of Nollywood features that come out yearly.

The Awards fest is organized by the African Film Academy to improve the quality of local cinema, even flying in experts to counsel local filmmakers. (It recently brought out four international creative designers to work with Nigerian production crews.) They’ve also sponsored winning films to go to the Berlin, Cannes, and Toronto film fests.

“Beyond the glamour of the award, it is expected that the talents discovered would be used to correct the wrong impression about the African continent,” said Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa at yesterday’s Awards Ceremony. “I hope they would be used to switch the paradigm from the negative to the positive story of the African people and culture.”
